Our Leading Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Secures the Premier Place.

At first glance, Lux could seem closer to a challenging university challenge than a new pop album from a musician whose previous single was a collaboration with a global pop star. Divided across 4 distinct sections and sung in thirteen languages, this is a dizzying symphonic opus investigating feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical change, often by way of the perspective of various female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with raw openness elsewhere—is shot skyward on this record, carried by the constant sound of a full symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast list of contributors. Its sheer ambition by itself renders the efforts of other artists seem rather modest.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to avoid overly academic chin-stroking feels nothing short of a miracle, and full praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not her first project to blend historical sounds and the present, its scale are far higher on Lux, and the balancing act far more pronounced. What really elevates this fourth album, beyond its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be a core spirit of fun. Much like the legendary Björk during her height, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls you into its whirlwind. When she's tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless desire to stay right there through the ride.

A Prime Example of Joy

This playful energy comes forth brightly on a stirring piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, and we hear a spontaneous giggle and a declaration before a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge crashes in like cartoonish impact. The song then shifts to the wild single featuring galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The magic with this album is that the listener never exactly understand—or even want to know—what you will go to next."

Almost each track concludes in a totally different place from how it started. One moment examines the transient nature of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing her earlier trap-infused style starts out dark and brooding, with menacing beats, until fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to soften its rough corners.

The Bridge Of Art and Pop

Another crucial balancing act of the album involves straddling the gap of radical experimentation and broad appeal. It is little surprise that the album has become her highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a suite of truly undeniable hits. A song performed primarily in the English language swells around a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious melodies as it spirals upward. This feat is repeated by a different powerful track that grows and contracts, intertwining layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale figure concealing a blade: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a grand scale, a hungry grasp for high artistry in an era of impending artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism for sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its built-in excess. This is a deep well of hidden treasure that requires time to completely mine but never feels like a chore. Where some big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, this record is a lavish feast where the guests around it, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flutter between conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
