Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any major honors show nears, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
